On this page I will give you some tipps about planespotting locations at Friedrichshafen airport.

Spotting Locations:

1 Approach 24 Gerbertshaus

General:

From here you can spot arrivals on runway 24. The position is only recommendable in the late afternoon or evening.

To reach this position you need a car, that can be parked next to the street.

2 Approach 24 Fields

General:

From here you can spot arrivals on runway 24. The position is only recommendable in the late afternoon or evening.

Here they a a bit deeper compared to spot 1 and you can spot them from direct underneath when you are standing direct infront the runway or from a very flat angle when standing more closer to the forest.

To reach this position you need a car, that can be parked next to the street from Spot 1.

Time: Evening

Ladder: not needed

Focal length: n/a

Parking: Spot 1

3 Long term parking P4

General:

From here you can spot arrivals on runway 24.

4 Liebherr Hangar

General:

From this position you can spot several movements:

1. Arrivals on runway 24 but there you need a leader or stand on one of the 4 Stones between this private parking area and P4.

2. parked aircraft from Liebherr. All Liebherr Aircraft arrive or depart from here. So you can get some close ups of their business jets when you are directly at the fence. Therefore a ladder is recommendable to get a view over the fence.

3. Departures/Line-up 24: departing IFR traffic on runway 24 all taxi by there. Also there a ladder is recommendable. Parking Liebherr aircraft could be in your way!

4. Arrivals taxi to Apron 1 and 2

Time: Morning until afternoon

Ladder: needed in most cases

Focal length: n/a

Parking: P2 or P3

5 Parking P3 / Lineup 24

General:

From here you can perfectly spot departing traffic for Runway 24. All IFR traffic aircraft taxi along there before lineup. You are very Close to the aircraft so a very small lense is recommendable. But there is a fence you have to spot through or take a ledder to see over it. Its not very high and the holes in the fence a very huge so a lens up to a Diameter of about 90mm fits trough.

If the Runway 24 is in use you can ideally spot taxi and lineup. The Moment when the Airplane takes off is not possible to spot becuse of the tarrain.

When 06 is in use this spot is useless.

Time: all day

Ladder: not needed, fince is very wide

Focal length: 10-100

Parking: P2 or P3

6 Visitors terrace

General:

Late 2018 two people under the influence of drugs climbed over the fence of the visitor platform onto the roof infront, from there they have reached the apron where they tried to steal an airport vehicle...

After this incident the visitor platform is now closed for the time the construction work takes place to make sure that such an incident will never take place again.

I yet don't know in what way they will improve the security standards at the visitor platform, I will keep you updated!

For this time I recommend to use the other spotting position around the airport.

The most common Spotting Point at FDH. If you enter the Terminal and take the Elevator upstairs you reach the top of the Terminalbuilding. From there you have the complete Runway and Parking Areas in sight and also most of the Taxiways.

The perfect light conditions are from sunrise until the afternoon. But also in the evening you can get great shots whith Special lights and shadows.

If the Runway 24 is in use you can ideally spot taxi and lineup. The Moment when the Airplane takes off is in the most cases too far away to get some good shots. Approaching traffic lands a bit further south but they are at about 30ft when flying past in a 90 degree angle.

When Runway 06 is in use the departures are more easy to get but the most aircraft are at a high about 300-500ft when they are at the tarrace. Incoming Traffic can't be spotted at touchdown but while leaving the runway and taxi to parking.

Time: Morning until afternoon, Night

Ladder: not needed

Focal length: 18-300

Parking: P2 or P3

7 LSC Restaurant

General:

At the Restaurant of the LSC Friedrichshafen (Air Sports Club) you can spot parking aircraft at he positions 204, 205 and 206. There you are directly infront the aircraft but have a very close fence. A ledder may be useful but not very welcomed by the Restaurant. Otherwise you can stand on the benches that are in front the fence.

Time: Morning until Afternoon

Ladder: may be useful but not very welcomed by the Restaurant

Focal length: 10-100mm

Parking: at the restaurant if you stay there for a lunch

8 Remote parkings Apron 2

General:

This spot is only good for parking aircraft on positions 205 and 206. You can reach it by walking from the main street back to the fence.  There is a way between the building with the dark roof (police and fire department) and the building with the white roof. (Way marked in gray on the map)

Time: all day

Ladder: may be useful

Focal length: 10-100mm

Parking: n/a

9 Dornier Hill

General:

Next to the Dornier Museum are some small hills perfectly for spotters. You can easily look over the fence and can see late touchdowns and taxi of both landing directions. While the so called "Do-Days" in August or the AERO EXPO in April of every year you can see a lot of special visitors parking there and get some good shots.

Note: In 2017 it got decided the Dornier Museum will get a new plane: the Lufthansa Boeing 737-200 D-ABCE "Landshut" which got hijacked in 1977 and was forced to Mogadishu, Somalia. At the moment they plan to build a new hangar for her and the hill must give way for the hangar. It`s not clear yet when works begin but its expected in 2019 or 2020.

12 "Ant hill" / HI Hangar (HI = Hamburg International - former owner of this hangar)

General:

Very good Point when Rumway 06 is in use. You can get the taxiing aircraft when ist on the way to the runway and while takeoff. Incoming Traffic can be spotted perfectly while touchdown.

When Runway 24 is in use the most landing aircraft come by there too. Either when taxiing on F or when taking exit E they are turning back towards the terminal direct in front of you.

From the fence you can spot parking aircraft on Apron 4.

Note: heat haze is a factor for all runway pictures; there are some sea containers in front of the hangar that block some of the view

Time: Afternoon / Evening

Ladder: at the fence needed

Focal length: n/a

Parking: infont of the hangar

13 Taxiway F

You can spot aircraft rolling by there on F.

Focal length: n/a

Parking: --> Spot 14

14 Lineup 06 East

General:

On the small hills or with a ladder over the fence you can spot aircraft while taxi and takeoff to/on 06 or while rollout or taxi on/from 24.

Time: Afternoon / Evening

Ladder: at the fence needed, hills may be high enough but fence is in the picture

Focal length: n/a

Parking: directly infront of the hills

15 Runway 06

From this position you have a great overview of the runway.

For approaches on 06 you can also go on the gras island between the two roads.

Note: heat haze is a factor for all runway pictures

16 Bridge

General:

To get here just walk a bit further into the city from Spot 15. You get a similar view but you're a bit higher and closer to the centerline. Also the approach lights are better in the picture.

Time: Evening

Ladder: not needed

Focal length: n/a

Parking: Barbarossastraße

17 Lineup 06 West

General:

From this position you have a view onto the lineup area. It's also good for approaching traffic on 06 and 24 departures may be good too if they take off late and low.

It`s a very good spot in the evening hours.

The best place for parking your car is in the "Barbarossastraße".

Note: Lots of high bushes may block the view. Take time to find a good spot or use Spot 15

Time: Evening

Ladder: not needed

Focal length: Lineup 06/rollout 24: 70-200mm

Parking: Barbarossastraße
